Neve ParitzkiJerusalem's first cycle tunnel has been opened in Israel

The Kerem Tunnel is a great place to ride and hike.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is constructed as a part of an extensive cycle path that is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The tunnel's official opening ceremony, which is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) as well as a plethora of cyclists.

Elkin who's ministry spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested hundreds of millions of shekels each year in Jerusalem's tourist development as well as in creating new attractions and ventures that will connect the magnificent historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I would like to invite cyclists to ride a secure and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the goal of shifting the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved in its various neighborhoods. It will also increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in the year 1990 to relocate the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.
